Starting a career as a ride-hailing driver with platforms like Uber, Bolt, or Ola offers flexibility and the opportunity to earn on your terms. 1. Meet the Basic Eligibility Criteria

Before applying, ensure you:

  • Are at least 21 years old.
  • Hold a full UK or EU driving licence with a minimum of 3 years of driving experience.
  • Possess the right to work in the UK.
  • Have a National Insurance number.

2. Obtain a Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) Licence

In London, this licence is issued by Transport for London (TfL) and is commonly referred to as a PCO licence. The application process includes:​

  • Completing an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
  • Undergoing a medical examination to confirm you’re fit to drive.
  • Passing a topographical skills assessment to demonstrate your navigational abilities.
  • Meeting the English Language Requirement, which involves:
    • A speaking and listening test.
    • The Safety, Equality, and Regulatory Understanding (SERU) assessment focuses on reading and writing skills.​

Note: As of April 2023, all new PHV licence applicants must pass both the English language test and the SERU assessment.

3. Secure Appropriate Insurance

Before you can start driving, you’ll need private hire insurance, also known as Hire & Reward insurance. This policy covers you when transporting passengers for payment. Additionally, consider public liability insurance to protect against potential claims from passengers or third parties. ​

4. Register with Your Chosen Platform

Once you’ve met the above requirements:

  • Sign up on the platform’s website or app (e.g., Uber, Bolt, Ola).
  • Submit necessary documents, including your PHV licence, insurance details, and vehicle information.
  • Complete any required onboarding sessions or training modules.​

5. Start Driving and Earning

With all approvals in place, you’re ready to hit the road. Remember, your earnings can vary based on factors like location, hours worked, and demand. In London, drivers can expect to earn between £250 and £800 per week, though expenses such as congestion charges may apply.
